PNOC EC Receives Commendation from DENR-EMB

December 21, 2012, Malangas Coal Project, Zamboanga Sibugay. The DENR-Environmental Management Bureau Region IX presented a meritorious award to PNOC EC for its outstanding performance in environmental management and social development in its Malangas Project Operations (MPO) in Zamboanga Sibugay. The agency commends the tree planting activities of the company with 13,108 gmelina and mahogany seedlings planted which covers approximately ten (10) hectares within its industrial sites and surrounding communities.

As part of the Kaagapay sa Kabuhayan and Kalikasan Program of MPO, the company launched the Gmelina Tree Nursery and Plantation Project in 2011. This project engages local farmers in a contract-growing activity wherein gmelina seedlings are planted in their farm lots for a period of 3-5 years. At present, MPO have 5 local farmer partners covering more or less 9 hectares of land. Each hectare of land will be planted with 1,110 seedlings in 3 x 3 spacing.

Aside from having a gmelina plantation in the host communities, the company also planted gmelina and mahogany seedlings within its 5 industrial sites during the employee’s annual tree planting activity.
